This project aims to study aspects of the historical composition of concessive constructions joined by the periphrastic junctive words apesar de/apesar (de) que in Brazilian Portuguese, considering them to be derived from the name of the feeling pesar ("sorrow"). We are interested in gathering evidence of supposedly gradual morphosyntactic and semantic changes which have enabled the noun pesar to act as a concessive junctive word in specific contexts. Therefore, we have carried out a research from a diachronic perspective, based on data extracted from texts in different genres written over a time frame of five centuries.
