Silence and loss of identity: a study on Michel Laub's diário da queda

Abstract

According to Seligmann Silva (2008, p. 66), the so-called impossible narratives come from the unspeakable experiences that need to be said, because their testimony depends on the individual's recovery of his life in society after a traumatic event, thus forming a paradox. And it is through these that is born the literary style called as literature of testimony, where the writer takes advantage of real or fictitious experiences, attributing to them literary value when composing a work based on human memories in traumatic situations. In the analysis of the work Diário da Feda (2011), written by Michel Laub, we will try to understand the literary character of impossible narratives, the construction of memory dialoguing with literary styles, the persistence of silence in the face of selective discourse while fleeing the experience, besides analyzing within the framework composed by Laub the construction of identity, or its loss, facing the impracticability of human experience and the value of the literature of testimony contained in the work, which makes direct bridge with the book Is this a man? (1947), by Primo Levi, a pioneer in this literary style. (AU)
