Abstract

This project proposes to investigate the kinship relations amongst Syrian refugees and those applying for refugee status located in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo State, Brazil. Through intensive fieldwork and unstructured interviews, we aim to understand how kinship relations are produced, lived, and signified in refuge. We consider that human mobility is capable of producing new forms of experiencing the kinship, as it puts people and their relations in unusual situations. In this sense, we are interested in observing how refuge and kinship relations are articulated in the case of the Syrian presence in São Bernardo do Campo. The context is very singular, as the municipality has a strong Arabic and Islamic presence, and the Brazilian government has published a normative that facilitates the refugee application process by those displaced by the Syrian conflict.
