Seasonal infertility in swine: what is the impact on Brazilian swine production?

Abstract

The present study intends to evaluate the effects of seasonal infertility on productive and reproductive performance in sows of Brazilian pig herds and what influences on productivity in commercial farms. The retrospective study will be conducted through the analysis of five year results (2015-2019) of commercial farms belonging to DB Genetics located in Minas Gerais, Brazil. To evaluate seasonal infertility and the effect of temperature, all data will be analyzed according to fertility rate in the (summer and winter) and types of shed for pigs (shed with temperature control and shed without control). Will be included in the analysis indicators of reproductive performance as a number of piglets born, number of piglets weaned and number of piglets weaned in the previous lactation, weight at weaning, abortion rate per year (%), weaning weight, ) and the age at the first service will be evaluated for piglets. The original or transformed data will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) considering the complement of design measures repeated in time (SAS, 2013). When the main effect is significant, the averages from the performance analyzes will be compared using the PROC MIXED procedure of the statistical computer program SAS (Statistical Analysis System, 2013).
