Abstract

Without being tied to an exclusive strategy, the building can represent more than mere shelter. Architecture can be able to give meaning to the environment, can make a space turn into a place, reveal what is latent. Thus, the central objective of this "Bolsa Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior (BEPE)" is to investigate the relationships between body, environment and architecture in four buildings of Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura (House in Moledo (1998), House in Rua do Crasto (2001), House in Serra da Arrábida (2002) and House of Stories Paula Rego (2009)), discussing the construction of the landscape and the place in his buildings face to an idea of Phenomenology of Place in Architecture - his architecture is an expression of the ethos of the environment. Through historical, case studies and phenomenological qualitative methods and on-site visits, we intend to investigate how the Phenomenology of the Place appears in his projective process and his 4 works and their underlying logic. The project is drawn from two distinct moments: [1] the construction of the state of the art, which will be shaped by review and bibliographical analysis of materials and, later, will be studied the [2] Moura's project approaches in the light of the Phenomenology of the Place, understanding gained only from on-site visits to their buildings. Qualitative analyses will be made on the buildings selected for study cases, which will be understood according to two levels of environmental perception: firstly, in the immediate surrounding scale, providing the recognition of general implementation structures and dialogues with the surroundings; and a second, on the user's scale and his spatial perceptions in the buildings: [a] how spaces draw interior and exterior, their transition and mediation spaces, their thresholds; [b] how the building establishes its borders; [c] what is the Imago Mundi gathered by the building; [d] what are the language and the elements of composition, the tectonics and the use of materials - the body is the entity of perception, the main human spatial reference, body, now, interested in going through the poetics of the Portuguese dwelling, the particularities of an architecture connected to the land, anchored in the landscape and local materials.
