Abstract The performance of Mg-Si alloys is affected by both microstructure features and morphology of the Mg2Si phase. Some of the containing-Si Mg alloys of interest (either binary or ternary chemistries) show high proportion of eutectic constituting the microstructure. As such, eutectic size, distribution and morphology are aspects to be evaluated in a coupled way with the form of the Mg-rich matrix. Inter-relations of the mentioned features with the mechanical properties of the Mg-1.4 wt.%Si eutectic remain still a task to be accomplished as verified in the specialized literature. With this in mind, the main purpose here is to perform an analysis of the thermal and microstructure parameters such as grain size, cooling rate, morphologies of the phases as well as tensile properties and hardness of the Mg-1.4 wt.%Si eutectic. | |
