Abstract

Several studies have demonstrated high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders associated with the work of musicians at professional orchestras. Musicians have a routine of long periods of studies and trials, requiring high levels of physical load and leading to several musculoskeletal complaints. In addition, this population may also suffer from mental overload, emotional and psychosocial symptoms. Thus, this study aims to identify the musculoskeletal symptoms, psychosocial factors and biomechanical exposure of musicians of the Orquestra Experimental of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCAR), and the development of an orientation booklet based on the identified symptoms. All the 56 musicians of the orchestra will be invited to participate. Six questionnaires will be used to collect data: Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), Job Stress Scale (JSS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), Need for Recovery Scale (NFR) and the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory (SOFI). Biomechanical exposure will be assessed through the record of shoulder, head and upper trunk postures, as well as the electrical activity of the upper trapezius and wrist extensors muscles using portable devices. The data obtained will support the development of a booklet that will address issues helping musicians of orchestras to improve their musculoskeletal health status. (AU)
