In this project we aim to optimize, fabricate, and characterize interdigital transducers (IDTs) for surface acoustic wave (SAW) generation. Our final goal is to fabricate functional unidirectional devices (FEUDTs). In the first part of the project, the student will review the theoretical background of conventional IDT fabrication in order to optimize the physical characteristics of his devices. The fabrication of lithographic masks and optical lithography followed by lift-off will be performed in the sequence. We will also fabricate FEUDTs using designs proposed in the literature and compare their performance with the optimized IDTs. S-parameter measurements will be systematically performed in order to compare the functioning and efficiency of the two types for device. (AU)
