Abstract

The development of small satellites has a direct impact on key sectors of national development, namely: telecommunications, environment, and particularly defense, integration and control of 22 million km2 by the Brazilian Air Force. The present research project aims to provide the Institute for Advanced Studies with a new research group for the design, manufacture and testing of small satellites manufactured with laser. To this end, it aims at the development of welding and additive manufacture technologies of titanium with a view to the photonic manufacture of cubesats. The technological challenges are related to: a) manufacturing processes, which are still not dominated worldwide; b) with the raw material, because the titanium is highly reactive and with complex metallurgy and c) with the product, since the cubesats need to be designed to work in extreme conditions in space. Once the project is completed, a permanent platform for nanosat construction is expected to provide the potential to fabricate and integrate structures for space applications. As a direct consequence of the research project, other applications are planned in areas such as aeronautics, implants and metal-mechanics. (AU)
