Abstract

The objective of this project is to study some chronicles and colonial documents produced between 1550 and 1615 (approximately) in the context of the Viceroyalty of Peru, specifically the Spanish chronicles Suma y narración dos Incas written by Juan Diez de Betanzos (1551), Historia indica by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa (1573), Fabulas y ritos de los ingas by Cristóbal de Molina (1575), Instrucción para descubrir todas las guacas del piru (1581-1585) by Cristóbal de Albornoz, and Manuscrito de Huarochiri (1608-?). Also, this study will considerate the chronicles written by indigenous people, such as Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno (1585-1615) by Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala and Relación de Antigüedades desde reino del Piru (1613) by Juan de Santa Cruz Pachacuti. All these documents had a common factor, related to a concern about the history of the called New World and the temporal and spatial conceptions in Andean world. This caused a strong tension between Christian and medieval understandings that the Iberian chroniclers carried in their minds, and the indigenous concepts transmitted orally by the Andean people to the Spanish chroniclers and religious, commissioned to develop a narrative about Andean past. In this sense, this project pretends to approximate to the study of an indigenous temporal and spatial category used inside the references mentioned above: the pachacuti. The aim is to identify how pachacuti was represented in the documents produced from a Christian historical view, expressed in the work of Spanish and indigenous chroniclers. (AU)
