Micro-CT analysis of root surface and root canal filling after apicectomy by different methods

Abstract

Apicectomy is the resection of the root apical portion. The root surface should be regular after cutting, without changes in the adaptation of the filling material in the root canal. The aim of this study will be to evaluate the root surface and adaptation of the remaining root-end filling material after apicoectomy performed with a bur or ultrasonic tip. Twenty mandibular incisors will be prepared with NiTi rotary instruments up to 40 / .05 taper and filled with Bio-C Sealer bioceramic root canal sealer (Angelus, PR, Brazil) using the single cone technique. The specimens will be stored in an oven at 37ºC and 100% humidity until a complete sealer setting. Subsequently, scanning using micro-CT (SkyScan 1176) will be performed at a voxel size of 9 µm. After initial scanning, the teeth will be divided into 2 groups (n = 10) for apical last three-millimeter apicectomy using: Endo Z bur (Maillefer - Dentsply) on a rotating handpiece, or Bladesonic (Helse) tip coupled to an ultrasonic device. Further scanning will be performed after apicectomy. After reconstruction and superimposition of 3D images before and after apicoectomy, the root surface and adaptation of the filling material will be evaluated by assessing the material/dentin interface. Data will be submitted to appropriate statistical tests, with a significance level of 5%. (AU)
