Abstract The constant search for techniques that optimize the process of heat transfer, including phase-change, requires the study of the dynamics of the vapor bubble in the nucleate boiling process. Thus, the present work has the objective of studying the mechanisms of heat transfer in the nucleate boiling regime by means of experimental tests on a flat copper surface with artificial cavity, analyzing the steps of growth and departure of the vapor bubble. This research involves the design of an experimental apparatus and the results analysis, including the phenomenon visualization. Aspects concerning the formation and growth of vapor bubbles, as well as, drying out effect related to the interaction surface/fluid, are thoroughly studied by analysis of the experimental data and visualization of the boiling phenomenon. Two different working fluids, at saturated conditions and with different thermophysical properties, water and HFE-7100, will be analyzed. In addition, the present study will also involve the characterization of the tested surface using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermography, and wettability test techniques. The contribution of this work is to obtain results of interest for the industry of thermal equipment control of machines in general, as well as to develop a more detailed study of the mechanisms of heat transfer present in the formation and detachment of the vapor bubble.
