Abstract

Ordered mesoporous silicas are excellent carriers for protein encapsulation because they have pores of different diameters. During the process of protein adsorption on the silica surface, distinct intermolecular interactions are established which can provide the proteins greater structural/functional stability in chemical, mechanical and thermal treatments. SBA-15 is one of the most studied ordered mesoporous silica particles, whose action as an antigen protective vehicle in vaccines is already known. In this work, we propose the study of incorporation of proteins in SBA-15 with surface containing different functional groups (hydrophilic, hydrophobic). The possible structural changes in proteins mainly composed of distinct elements of secondary structure will be investigated, as well as the influence of different functional groups on the surface of the SBA-15 during the process of protein adsorption and their release in buffer solutions and in solutions that mimic the gastrointestinal fluid will be monitored.
