Abstract

Healthcare-Related Infections (HAI) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and affect developing countries with particular intensity. HAI are especially frequent in Intensive Care Units (ICU), where patients are severely ill and exposed to invasive devices. The São Paulo State Epidemiological Surveillance Center (CVE-SP) has been monitoring ICU device-associated infections since 2004. Although there is a general tendency to reduce incidence over time, the reasons for variation are not entirely clear. Rates vary among different hospitals. It is plausible that environmental and socioeconomic conditions in the municipalities or regions in which hospitals are located have an impact on the magnitude of HAI. We propose an ecological study of predictors of incidence of device-associated HAI in the State of São Paulo. The effects of environmental (temperature, altitude), demographic (population, population density, urbanization rate) and socioeconomic (illiteracy rate, per capita income, Gini Index, Human Development Index) variables will be analyzed. We will use multivariate models with adjustments for spatial (latitude and longitude coordinates) and temporal (year of rate measurement) variables. Thus, we intend to identify determinants of incidence and spatiotemporal patterns of HAI, contributing to the design policies for HAI prevention and control. (AU)
