Abstract

In this project, we propose an investigation by specialized X-ray based techniques of the charge density wave (CDW) order in the novel transition metal dichalcogenide ZrTe_{2}. When doped with Ni (Ni_{x}ZrTe_{2}), it is suggested by transport measurements that this novel material undergoes a CDW transition with a transition temperature (T) of about T_{\text{CDW}}=285 K. This same material exhibits a well defined superconducting transition at about T_{\text{SC}}=4 K, making Ni-doped ZrTe_{2} a suitable platform for exploring the coexistence of charge ordering and superconductivity. The confirmation of the CDW ordering and the characterization of the CDW phase, in particular of how it behaves as a function of pressure (P) and composition (x), are the main objectives of this project. In the first stage, the candidate will receive training and education on X-ray diffraction experiments and data analysis. It will include studies on the basics of crystallography and X-ray diffraction experiments with pressure, to be performed in collaboration with members of our research group. In the second stage, synchrotron-based experiments will be performed. In this regard, we will take advantage of the unique EMA facilities at the new SIRIUS accelerator, which will allow the combination of low temperatures and high pressures with X-ray based techniques, to investigate the possibility of the coexistence of the CDW order with superconductivity.
