Abstract

The journalistic literary criticism, although almost extinct today, is of great importance for the discovery of new writers and for their success as a reference for prestigious literature. Even if these considerations are obvious, there are few studies that seek to understand literary criticism from a different perspective of Literary Theory. Based on these considerations, this study intends to analyze the laudatory discourse in the article "Perto do coração selvagem", published in July 1944, in the newspaper Folha da Manhã, by Antonio Candido, referring to the literary debut of Clarice Lispector, with the objective of verifying the rhetorical expedients used in the constitution of the praise and ethos of both the writer and the critic. For this, the study is based especially on the theoretical assumptions of Rhetoric (ARISTÓTELES, 2015) and New Rhetoric (PERELMAN; OLBRECHTS-TYTECA, 2005; REBOUL, 2004; MEYER 2007; EGGS, 2008; FERREIRA, 2010; FIORIN, 2015), with emphasis on the notion of ethos.
