Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of ozonized oil against bacteria associated with bovine mastitis

Abstract

Mastitis is one of the most prevalent diseases and economically detrimental to dairy farming. Currently, the suggested therapeutic approach for mastitis is use of antibiotics. However, increasing antimicrobial resistance is a matter of public concern. The refractoriness to conventional antimicrobial therapy has been partially credited to formation of bacterial biofilm. Due to its high oxidizing action, ozone is considered a potent germicide. Additionally, preliminary results from our research group confirmed the antibiofilm ability of the ozonized sunflower oil against various biofilm. Therefore, the present study will describe the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the ozonated sunflower oil against standard strains and clinical isolates of the bacteria associated with bovine mastitis: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermitis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Escherichia coli. Pathogens will be subjected to treatment with ozonized sunflower oil with peroxidation index superior 500 mEq kg-1. Sterility, negative and positive controls will also be cultured. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, Minimum Bactericidal Concentration, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of the Mixed Biofilm and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Biofilm Eradication of the treatment will be determined in triplicate. The results will be disseminated through a full article in international journal with high impact factor.
