Abstract

Reducing noise and fuel consumption are imperative goals in the aeronautical industry. Aiming at these goals, the use of flow control techniques has gained an increasing importance in the last few years. Since the boundary layer flow has a substantial influence in the aeroacoustics and aerodynamics of aircraft, an experimental Ph.D. research is proposed, towards flow estimation and control in this region. A resolvent-based method will be used for the flow estimation. Resolvent analysis allows the problem to be evaluated in an input-output framework, where it is possible to identify the optimal forcing terms and the corresponding most amplified responses. Thus, by associating sensor reading data with these terms it is possible to estimate the statistics of nonlinear terms of the flow, and subsequently its state as a function of time. In this approach, the linearized Navier-Stokes equations are used, therefore for flow control one may apply linear control theory. From this research the development of a control system is expected, which would be able to provide a flow with lower drag and noise levels; this shall be done based on estimation obtained with a limited number of pressure sensors, easily applicable on aerodynamic surfaces. This research results might also benefit other fields such as the automotive and the wind turbine industries. (AU)
