Abstract

Water distribution networks in Brazil have been presenting problems related to water loss in buried pipes mainly due to leaks. Test rigs, where leak simulations under controlled conditions can be performed, are important to help water companies to investigate ways for its location and detection. There are several techniques and methods to simulate the leaks. However, there is no criterion adopted to know which machine is the best and fully compatible with actual situations. Hence, this work aims to study and implement a different type of mechanism that can simulate leak situations. Moreover, this work also aims to develop an analytical wave-based model, which can be used to compare the results obtained to the results collected in the field given then a physical insight. For this, systematic measurements will be carried out in a bespoke test rig located in the city of Tupã - Sao Paulo. This rig will be used to carry out simulated leak conditions and point out which mechanism (or mechanisms) is feasible for simulating leaks. (AU)
