Effects of the internal load of Pilates training in young people: a randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract

There has been and increasing awareness of the need to practice some physical activity with various objectives, mainly as a preventive feature. In this perspective, the use of the Pilates method is perceived as an instrument of physical exercise for the protection and promotion of health. However, despite being popularly performed, there is still no scientific evidence on the standardization of the use of the method and the effects of the internal training load for an adequate training prescription. Objective: to evaluate the effect of the internal training load of the Pilates method in healthy young individuals and to verify if there is a clinically relevant correlation between the tools for monitoring the progression of loads (subjective perception of effort [SPE], heart rate [HR] and heart rate variability [HRV]) in the Pilates method. In addition to analyzing the effect of the long-term method on cardiorespiratory, autonomic and psychometric parameters. Methods: 54 healthy men aged 18 to 35 years will be part of the study. Initially, an assessment will be carried out to collect personal data and the initial assessments of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (f), partial oxygen saturation (SatO2) and HRV. Then there will be three sessions of familiarization with the Pilates method. Subsequently, the training period will begin, totaling 36 sessions over 12 weeks, with duration in minutes varying with each session. During the 12 weeks, the participants must pass through the three levels of training of the method, being: basic, intermediate and advanced, with the progression of the exercises predetermined. In each session, a cardiofrequency meter will be positioned on the participant's chest to capture the RR intervals and subsequent analysis of HRV, which will occur throughout the session along with the PSE scale proposed by Borg and the HR that will be collected every five minutes until the end of the session. In addition, 15 minutes after the end of each session, HR and the SPE scale will be collected again. One week after the end of the Pilates training, final evaluations will be carried out identical to the initial ones. Descriptive statistics will be used.The comparison of outcomes before and after the training period will be performed using ANOVA for repeated measures in the two-factor scheme. For the analysis of the internal training load, the training impulse method (TRIMP) using the SPE and HR will be used, in addition to the use of the weekly average of rMSSD and the coefficient of intra-individual variation of the rMSSD, and the magnitude-based inferences. In addition, Pearson's or Sperman's correlation will also be used according to normality to verify the correlation between the training monitoring tools.
