Abstract

This project proposes to analyses the play "Believe as You List" (1631) by the English playwright Philip Massinger, in order to observe the circulation of news about the Sebastian of Venice and its repercussions in the discussions and representations of the king's image, in the midst of political disputes and unpopularity of the English monarchy during the reign of Charles I (1625-1649). In order to approach these questions, the research will analyses reports referring to Sebastian of Portugal, as well as the ones about the "false Sebastians" and the Anglo-Iberian relations in Caroline England, central issues to Massinger's play.
