Seventeenth century interpretations of the five kingdoms dreams: sebastianists, joanists, and fifth-monarchy men, and the concepts of empire, universal monarchy, republic and sovereignty - Portugal, England and Americas

Abstract

The proposal of this research is to investigate the prophetic-political formulations and movements in Portugal, England and the Americas over the 17th century, analyzing fifth monarchy and fifth empire interpretations based on Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar and Ezra's dreams of the five kingdoms. The center of attention is in periods of political confrontation or reorganization, namely the portuguese restoration and the puritan revolution. More than a comparative study, it pursues to map the movements of common texts, references, ideas among the fifth-monarchy men, sebastianists and joanistas and to identify the trajectory of these individuals, looking for the connections and the possible conflicts among the diverse formulations. Identifying these paths and circuits, and comparing the similarities and differences of these projects, we intend to investigate these interpretations to reflect which were the differences and similarities amid trent catholicism and calvinist/puritan protestantism answers to the problems linked to the constitution of fundamental early modem political concepts, as empire, monarchy, republic, power, sovereignty and government, in 17th century Europe and the Americas. These efforts intend to develop the area of early modem history, and particularly a field of 17th century political culture, on UNIFESP. They seek to create opportunities for professors, researchers and students on the campus of Guarulhos, UNIFESP, to expand the research on ancién regime political culture, with the establishment of a source collection and developing studies in connected history.
