Abstract

The project intends to make a comparative study between the theory of Hobbesian representation and the practice of representation in contemporary democratic systems highlighting the importance of the concept of representation in Hobbes' political thinking and in the formation of modern democratic states and besides examining some analogies and differences between the Hobbes scheme and the theory and practice of contemporary representation. It will be considered for this purpose in this project that the Leviathan is not entirely opposed to representative democracy in several respects, and that it is not entirely assimilable. It is not, however, a question of carrying out a decal or mass transfer of model, but rather a confrontation, first and foremost on problems related to representation. It is hoped, then, to draw some essential concepts which, by helping to better understand this thought, will also help to take some distance from a familiar system (representative democracy), but obscure and generally understood as a power exercised "in the name" of the people by its representatives, and that it affirms that its representation is legitimate. The research will be supported by the analysis of the works of Hobbes and other authors and the studies on the subject, besides monitoring the evolution of the question of representation in the actuality.
