Reliability and the construct validity of a Brazilian measure of medication adherence

Abstract

Medication adherence is a complex behavior in the treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases. In order to contribute to an accurate measure of medication adherence, the Instrument for the Global Evaluation of Drug Adherence - IAGAM was developed in the Brazilian culture. The IAGAM presented partial convergent construct validity and satisfactory values of sensitivity and specificity, but its reliability was not tested. This study aims to estimate the reliability and the construct convergent validity of the measurement with the Brazilian version of the Brief Medication Questionnaire - BMQ, when applied to outpatients using oral anticoagulants (OAC). Will be part of this study outpatients using OAC accompanied in the university hospital in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Data on sociodemographic and clinical characterization and medication adherence will be obtained through the application of the Brazilian version of the BMQ and IAGAM. After approval by the Ethics Committee, the data collection will be done by telephone contact at two periods, with an interval of 15 days. The data will be analyzed by descriptive statistics and by Kappa coefficient and Spearman or Pearson correlation coefficient. A significance level of 5% will be adopted. (AU)
