Abstract

The process of occupation of the Amazon has always been linked to strategic interests, starting with the construction of fortifications and the performance of religious orders - which aimed to protect the territory and manipulate indigenous communities - until the period of implementation of major projects - aimed at territorial integration and exploitation of natural resources. With these different processes, the development of the urban space was occurring in a particular way, for example, the occupation nodes that emerged in the coast of Para from the seventeenth century resulted from the need for small vessels, which linked Belém and São Luiz, to docking on land for supply and support, the sprawling set of Atlantic coast cities became known as the Salgado region (Égler, 1962). Thus, the present research project has as its general objective to understand the urban diversity of the sub-region of Salgado from the singularity of the cities of the coast of Pará, investigating its relations with the local and the seeking to propose an urban typology that can capture the singularities of the place. The research aims to give visibility to these locations, since in the midst of the process of space production in the Amazon the Salgado sub-region was not an area of expansion of the border of big capital, so we seek to analyze and propose a typology that embrace the singularities and daily life of the little-known tidal cities.
