Abstract

The incidence of obesity has been increasing among the population as well as other diseases related to it such as diabetes, various cancers, cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. Consumption of fruits and vegetables is among the factors to decrease the incidence of these diseases. Orange, one of the most consumed fruits in Brazil, has a wide variety of compounds with beneficial health effects such as monoterpene d-limonene. In animal models, d-limonene has been shown to have beneficial effects on lipid and glucose metabolism. This compound is well absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and is rapidly metabolized and excreted in the urine, showing low toxicity in rodent and human studies. For these reasons, this study aims to evaluate the effect of d-limonene on lipid and glucose metabolism in C57 / B16 mice in order to verify its protection against glucose intolerance and dyslipidemia. Male animals at 11 weeks of age will be distributed in 8 groups, fed a diet of defined composition (AIN-93M), and 4 groups will be fed a control diet and the others with a hyperlipid diet. After one week of adaptation, supplementation with d-limonene added to the diet at concentrations of 0.1, 0.4, and 0.8% will be administered to 3 groups fed the hyperlipid diet and the control diet. Supplementation with d-limonene is expected to reduce plasma glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels and prevent lipid accumulation in the liver of animals. The results obtained in this study will allow us to generate unpublished data on the effects of d-limonene on lipid and glucose metabolism in mice. (AU)
