Abstract

One recent discovery has challenged our theoretical understanding of the life histories of galaxies. Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) were found unexpectedly in extremely deep images of clusters of galaxies. Intriguingly, these are galaxies that have the sizes of giants but the luminosities of dwarfs. In this project, we will address problems in galaxy formation and evolution using observations from the world's most powerful optical and near-infrared telescopes, especially the Keck 10-metre telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. Additionally, using large-area photometric surveys, we plan at studying the star cluster system of these objects and also develop machine learning techniques to look for and identify these intriguing galaxies in the sky. The observations that I will plan, propose for, and execute, will incorporate information from the globular star clusters orbiting these very faint host galaxies, aiming at understanding how their existence challenges the fundamental assumptions underpinning the standard paradigm of galaxy formation in a cosmological context.
