Abstract

The knowledge of taphonomic signatures in current specimens and the processes that originated them is of great value in paleontological studies, especially taphonomic studies, as it helps to detail fossilization and, thus, to reconstruct the paleoenvironment. Such understanding is seen as one of the focuses of actuopaleontology and applying it increases the reliability of biological interpretations. However, the volume of Brazilian scientific productions with this approach is not high, and this is a frontier of knowledge that is still little explored. Among the existing works, most are concentrated on the coast of the State of São Paulo, part of them with brachiopods and gastropods in the Ubatuba cove analyzing the relationship between the taphonomic signatures of the shells and the environment that provided them. In the case of brachiopods, specifically with Bouchardia rosea, in addition to the macroscopic characteristics, chemical composition analyzes were performed on the valves of some of the specimens in order to verify the compositional record deposited in them and, thus, to understand possible implications in the disappearance of the species. That said, the present work aims to make a similar analysis in the gastropod shells collected in the same place to understand whether the processes are registered differently, or not, in the analyzed taxa.
