Abstract

It is noted, in national and international literature, great concern (among health and education professionals) in investigating children's spelling. Many studies try to describe children's spelling performance by analyzing spelling errors and their typologies (omissions, transpositions, substitutions) present in children's writing. However, most of these studies, in addition to viewing spelling errors as symptoms or delay in the literacy course, put the different types of errors on the same complexity plane. We assume, however, gradience in the relationship between hits and errors and also gradience within each type of error, as proposed by Chacon and Pezarini (2017), which leads to question the tendency of literature to view them in the same plane. Thus, we propose a cross-sectional study of characteristics of a specific type of error: grapheme transpositions. Particularly, we propose to investigate how phonetic-phonological characteristics of the syllable would allow a better understanding of where they leave and where preferably arrive the grapheme displacements. For that, we will analyze 509 textual productions of children from Elementary School. Firstly, we will count all the possibilities of graphemes record in each text; then we will quantify the presence of grapheme transpositions checking their distribution in: exchanges, intersyllable transposition and intrasyllable transpositions. It will still be observed if the point where they leave and the point where they arrive correspond to a phonetically weak position and phonologically complex position. Finally, we will analyze if the displacements leave from stressed syllables or non-stressed syllables. Contributions are expected from this proposal for a better understanding of the phonetic-phonological bases of spelling, as well as for the development of pedagogical and clinical practices with children's writing.
