Influence of local and/or systemic coenzyme Q10 as adjunctive therapy to mechanical treatment of experimental periodontitis in rats

Abstract

The aim of this study will be to evaluate the influence of local and/or systemic adjunctive therapy with coenzyme Q10 (CQ10) to scaling and root planing (SRP) for the treatment of experimental periodontitis (EP). Eighty male Wistar rats will be divided into 5 groups (n=16) in accordance with the treatments to be performed: EP-SRP: subgingival irrigation with physiological saline solution (PSS); EP-SRP/Q10L: subgingival irrigation with 1ml of CQ10 solution; EP-SRP/S: daily gastric gavage with 1ml of vegetal glycerin; EP-SRP/Q10S: daily gastric gavage with 120 mg of CQ10; EP-SRP/Q10LS: subgingival irrigation with 1ml of CQ10 solution and daily gastric gavage with 120 mg of CQ10. Fifteen days prior treatments, a cotton thread will be placed around the left mandibular first molars for induction of EP. At day 0, SRP will be performed in all animals and subgingival irrigation and/or systemic treatment with initiate in accordance with experimental groups. The euthanasia will be performed at 7 and 28 days after treatment. The specimens will be collected and processed for histopathologic, histometric (percentage of bone in the furcation) and immunochemical analysis for detection of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-±). After normality and homoscedasticity analysis, data will be submitted to the most appropriate tests assuming 5% of significance (pd0.05).
