Extreme climate events in Grande ABC: identification via the standardized precipitation index, associated oceanic conditions and socio-environmental impacts

Abstract

Global climate change reveals changes in climate dynamics and air-sea interaction at the regional scale. Increasing in the intensity and frequency, extreme wet and dry events have been observed in the municipalities close to the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP), which comprise the "Grande ABC": Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo, São Caetano, Diadema, Mauá, Rio Grande da Serra and Ribeirão Pires. Beyond the social impacts caused by extreme events, the "Grande ABC" has its importance for the RMSP in terms of water supply and of the industrial sector. The objective of thiswork is to analyze the extreme climate events in the "Grande ABC" region occurred in the period between 2001 and 2019 through the calculation of the SPI index (Standardized Precipitation Index). It is an index pursuing a multiscale nature (1,3,6 and 12 months), and it is recommended by the World Meteorological Organization for the study of climatic extremes related to the precipitation. Monthly rainfall data comes from the Integrated Multi-satellite project Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurements (GPM-IMERG), with regular spatio coverageat high resolution (~ 10 km) . The events will be identified and classified by the parameters: severity, duration, intensity and peak. Possible relationship between these events and the oceanic anomalies of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Subtropical Atlantic Dipole phenomena will also be investigated. In addition, it is proposed to carry out case studies of severe wet and dry events identified via the SPI-12 through bibliographic review of official reports concerning socio-environmental impacts.
