Abstract

The present master's research regards a commented transcription of the manuscript "Treatise of Architecture" (1576), dated and attributed to Antônio Rodrigues, master of works and fortifications of the Portuguese Kingdom amid the second quarter of the 16th century. Thus, this work aims to understand the systematization of the architectural theory in Portugal, which stood out aligned with the Italian treatise that had constituted itself as a canon for the architects of the Iberian Peninsula during the Five Hundred. The research internship abroad will afford the candidate to access the original manuscript deposited at the National Library of Portugal (code 3675), and thus, assuring the reliability of its transcription, which cannot be carried out only from the scanned version of the document. Besides, the internship will provide a valuable contact with the bibliography related to the studies of Renaissance architecture in Portugal, which is mostly inaccessible in Brazil, and mandatory to understand the artistic context in which the Renaissance architecture took place and. The research in the archives and the contact with Portuguese researchers with studies regarding the role of the 16th century's architect and the Portuguese Renaissance architecture might also shed light on Rodrigues' professional performance - which is not yet well known. Therefore, the attesting on this research stage may broaden the horizons of our research based on new information and discussions that are more widely discussed in the Portuguese environment. (AU)
