Abstract

This research aims to investigate and carry out a survey on the architectural production of modern single homes by the architect Paulo Barbieri in the city of Araraquara (Brazil), an architect and urban planner graduated in the National Faculty of Architecture of the University of Brazil, in 1957. This research interrogates the existence of specific aspects of the architectural and urbanistic production of the Modern Brazilian Movement and attempts to discover common ideas and, on the other hand, distinguishing characteristics specific to the most expressive aspect of the Brazilian Modernism. Early at the beginning of the twentieth century, the region of Araraquara had a very important economic production based on coffee production and later with a diversified industrial activity, with goods for local and regional consumption, with changes in architecture and urbanism of the cities, as Araraquara, from the desires of the local elite. This research analyzes the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, a period considered by the historiography as the consolidation of the Modernist Movement in Brazil, and attempts to better know and understand the works of modern architecture produced in the interior of the state of São Paulo, by architects and urban planners who concentrate their professional activity outside the big urban centers, that still represents an new exploratory field of investigation with new discovers and questions, compared with an architectural historiography based mainly on the books of Philip Goodwin (1943) and Henrique E. Mindlin (1956) and in journals and magazines specialized in architecture, such as the magazine Acrópole (1938 - 1971), and which concentrated their publications and the diffusion and dissemination of the Modern Brazilian Architecture ideas and principles on works carried out in big cities. The research studies and analyzes the work of Paulo Barbieri, since the beginning of his professional work as an autonomous architect in 1958 and his participation in the development of the master plans of the cities of Matao, Sertaozinho and Araraquara, in the 1970s, he was the president of the Araraquara Association of Engineering, Architecture and Agronomy in the city of Araraquara, from September 1975 to March 1981, until his participation in the idealization and creation of the Architecture and Urbanism Course at the University of Araraquara in 1998, the study interrogates and analyzes the relation between his works and practice in the field, and the dissemination of the Modern Architecture principles, concentrated on his singles homes works in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. This research methodology is based on the analysis of primary documents, in architectural documentation files from the architect's personal collection, registering images and information about these documents, in order to systematize the information about this production following a temporally linear organization, in a second moment the study intend to map his works in the city of Araraquara, taking some actual images. Thus, based on a theoretical investigation on the subject and on the analyzes of these primary documentation, the study attempts to interrogates the symbolic meaning of his residential work, based on the solutions of their environments and their relationship with the city in the context of its historical, social, economic, technological and cultural conditions within the framework of Brazilian Architecture. Finally, this work attempts to analyzes and discusses questions about the origins of Brazilian Architecture, and questions specific to these aspects of modern architecture, assisting in the creation of specific bibliography on the subject and about the architect's work.
