Abstract

This project is part of the Master's research "Memória familiar e estatuto social feminino em túmulos aristocráticos merovíngios (séculos VI - VII)", developed in the Programa de Pós-Graduação em História Social, at the Universidade de São Paulo. Our goal is to understand the female social roles among the elites of the Merovingian Kingdom with funerary deposits and burial practices from the 6th and 7th centuries. The tombs used in the research are: the tomb of Queen Aregond (6th century), in the Cathedral of Saint-Denis (France); that of the "Lady of Grez-Doiceau" (6th century), in the necropolis of Bossut-Gottechain (Belgium); that of Queen Wisegard (6th century), in the Cathedral of Cologne (Germany); the "sépulture 12" of Saint-Dizier, in the necropolis of La Tuilerie (France); and finally the tomb of Queen Bathild (7th century), in Chelles (France). It is important to point out that, in this period, funerary ceremonies were not passive reflexes of belonging to the elites, but active elements in social relations, as part of strategies to assert power. Therefore, the notion of "family memory" is essential for our study, because its materialization was fundamental to legitimize a family's social position and political rights. This type of analysis of objects (mainly those in funerary context), of medieval spaces and constructions, with the notion of "memory", has been notably worked in the Ausonius (Institut de Recherche Antiquité et Moyen ge - UMR 5607), research center of the Université Bordeaux Montaigne in which the present internship intends to be held.
