Abstract

This project aims to investigate a crucial stage in modernity: the moment when competing philosophical systems put forward different ways of thinking about the economic object in its relationship with political regimes and as an instrument for resolving political and social conflicts. In other words, starting from a topic and conceptual approach, we will seek to investigate the responses of these authors to a triple problem: 1) to explore, through social theories aimed at redefining the link between the public and the private, both the associative and dissociative aspects of particular interests, a problem present not only in theories of spontaneous or natural harmony (public interest as an involuntary consequence of selfish passions) but also in theories of political obligation (public interest as a composition or as "common" established by private interests); 2) to rethink, on the basis of a moral philosophy forged since the beginning of the 18th century which reclassifies the role of economic behaviour for the benefit of the good art of governing, the existing correlation of forces between the State, individuals and civil society; 3) and to meditate on the role and place that the debate on political regimes, especially democracy, acquires in the face of trade, labour and wealth, notions understood from then on as new forms of the exercise of power and justice within commercial society.
