Abstract

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common childhood rheumatic disease in the world, affecting approximately 1 of every 1000 children, being an arthritic condition of unknown etiology. TMJ is one of the most affected joints in individuals with JIA. Although TMJ damage in JIA is often asymptomatic, the joint can be affected unilaterally and bilaterally, and may occur early, or throughout the disease. The lack of diagnosis and treatment of this problem can have serious consequences, such as pain, destruction of cartilage and bone tissue and changes in mandibular growth. Thus, early detection and initial treatment of patients with TMJ affected by JIA, can contribute to better clinical outcomes. This work aims to explore the texture analysis of MRI images of the TMJ of JIA patients, evaluating whether the texture parameters are capable of predicting early trabecular lesions in the joint condyle.
