Abstract

Boundary layers over plane walls disturbed by ripples are frequently found in both nature and industry. Some examples are air flows over ripples and dunes in deserts and water flows over subaqueous dunes in pipes. The perturbation of the boundary layer by a wavy bed introduces new scales in the problem, changing the way in which velocities and stresses are distributed in the flow field. When in the presence of sediment transport, the stress distribution is highly associated with bed instabilities. This MSc Thesis is devoted to study experimentally a turbulent flow over a granular bed with bedforms. In the experiments, different water flows will be imposed over wavy granular beds in a closed conduit, and the velocity fields will be measured by using PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry). From the instantaneous fields, mean and fluctuations will be computed. Velocity and stress fields will be compared with analytical expressions existing in the literature and the shear stress on the bed will be analyzed in terms of bed instability. (AU)
