Abstract

Fluid flow can be responsible for vibrations in structures, as happens in the phenomena of Vortex-Induced Vibrations in immersed bodies and galloping in eletric transmission lines. These mechanical vibrations are an important topic in several engineering areas, since they can lead to structural fatigue and catastrophic failures. Thus, the study of their control is of interest. This research is based on obtaining electrical energy from the phenomena of galloping and VIV by coupling a generator to the axis of rotation of a Rotary Nonlinear Energy Sink. This system, named Rotary NES-EH, is promising, since with a proper optimization of the NES, parameters can be found in a way that its secondary mass rotate with an approximately constant rotational speed, propitious to harvest energy through a generator. In addition, Nonlinear Energy Sink robustely suppress vibrations over a wide range of excitation frequencies. The project will be developed through computer simulations of the galloping and VIV systems with and without the rotary NES-EH, so that the phenomena can be understood and the energy transfer and eletric conversion can be analysed.
