Abstract

In view of the wide variety of types of polishing kits available on the market, it is difficult to choose an appropriate and effective system for dental ceramics. The objective of the study is to evaluate a composition of different polishing systems and their action on surface roughness and fracture resistance of ceramics. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray dispersive energy spectrometry (EDS) of the abrasive tips will be performed before and after polishing. 100 specimens (cps) will be made in feldspar glassy ceramic, in the form of discs. At 10 cps no change in the surface will be caused (C - positive control) while the others will be roughened in a standardized way with diamond tip FF. Then they will be divided into groups (n = 10) according to the surface smoothing system used: FF-unpolished; GL - Glaze application; DH - Pk5 Dhpro, OP - Optrafine kit; SH - Ceramisté kit; AM - Twist Gloss kit; CE - Cerapol kit; SO - Sof-lex kit; and SUP- Suprinity kit. After surface treatment, a surface roughness test will be performed with a rugosimeter, and biaxial flexion test on three spheres, followed by SEM analysis of some packaged ceramic fragments from the test. The data will be supported statistically with no R software and considering the significance level of 5%. The hypothesis is that the different methods of surface smoothing show similar results of surface roughness and resistance, being superior to roughness.
