Abstract

Integrated agricultural systems comprise a promising alternative to promote soil quality and to provide ecosystem services. This project aims to assess soil physical quality in integrated agricultural systems, pastures and in native forest with on-farm, analytical and digital measurements. Six soil management systems will be sampled in an experimental farm of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) Southeast Livestock: continuous grazing, rotational grazing, integrated livestock-forest system, integrated crop-livestock system, integrated crop-livestock-forest system and native vegetation. A range of analyses will be performed to infer about the physical quality of the soil, including on-farm analyses (water infiltration and visual evaluation of soil structure), analytical analyses (soil bulk density, saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, soil water retention curve, soil resistance to penetration and aggregate stability index) and digital analyses (micromorphometry, computed tomography and multifractal analyses). The results will be analyzed with non-parametric tests and exploratory multivariate analysis. The project has started on 2019/1 and it will continue up to 2023/1. The teamwork includes professionals from the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture/University of São Paulo, Embrapa Southeast Livestock, Federal University of Pernambuco and Rutgers University. The results from this work will be important to understand the hydro-physical functioning of the soils under integrated agricultural systems, aside from increasing the current data set from the experimental farm.
