Between space continuity and territory discontinuity: importance of dry ports for urban sprawl and socio-spatial fragmentation

Abstract

This proposal aims to analyze the importance of dry ports in non-metropolitan realities in line with vectors of contemporary urbanization, considering a dispersion of the urban slick caused by the location of enterprises and, considering, considering them during the ongoing fragmentation process in cities. It is hypothesized that the consolidation of dry ports in medium-sized cities endows them with greater complexity as they cause territorial extension and are new objects external to cities, deepening the processes of socio-spatial differentiation and corroborating fragmentation processes. As empirical realities the proposal turns to the non-metropolitan cities of: Varginha/MG, Juiz de Fora/MG, Ribeirão Preto/SP and Maringá/PR located in strategic geographic situations of the country and, therefore, components of networks of various orders. Despite being located further from the traditional urban fabric, dry ports involve various agents and institutions that are part of spatial practices marked by the continuity demanded by the reproduction of capital, leading to the articulation between territorial discontinuities and spatial continuities. Methodologically, the research will be based on five axes: a) bibliographic, secondary data and documentary survey; b) fieldwork in the dry ports and cities analyzed; c) semi-structured interviews with businessmen, workers and public secretaries; d) systematization of results from comparative analysis and; e) analysis of information and preparation of cartographic projects. The proposal is justified by considering the new complexions of contemporary urbanization, articulating the scales of the city with that of urban networks, as well as the integration between public and private agents responsible for dry ports.
