Abstract Recent decades have witnessed a revolution in the experimental control of coherent quantum systems. One of the major potential applications this opens is in the field of sensing and metrology, with examples ranging from magnetometry to thermometry. This project will be centered around the idea of stroboscopic metrology in systems that are continuously measured. Sensors already often employ stroboscopic monitoring a quantum systems. This yields data in the form of a time series, whose statistics is used to infer the quantity in question. However, existing protocols seldom taken into account the fact that the data in the time series is correlated. The extra information contained in these correlations could be used to design enhanced metrological protocols, providing a significant boost in sensitivity. This project aims to contribute quantitatively to this goal. Combining the tools of open quantum systems with stochastic simulations and parameter estimation theory, techniques which have long been used in the group of Prof. Landi, we propose to construct a toolbox for exploring stroboscopic metrology in quantum coherent systems. As an application, we plan to carry out a detailed study of quantum thermometry in micro-devices coupled to optical waveguides. The contributions of this project will therefore be both applied, as well as fundamental, in nature. And the toolbox the student will develop will serve as a building block for a broad variety of future research directions within our group. (AU) | |
