Abstract

This postdoctoral project intends to study of the collection of Dutch and Belgian modern art in the MAC-USP collection. First, this research intends to investigate the provenance of the artworks and the circumstances in which they were made. Secondly, I will analyze the impact of these works on Brazilian artistic production and criticism, in the context of the debate on abstraction in the post-war period. Eleven artists were selected from the museum's collection, born in the Netherlands and in Belgium, or who were related to artistic movements from these countries, between 1930 and 1970. They are: Constant Permeke, Karel Appel, Pierre Alenchinsky, William Gear, Johann Gutlich, Gerrit Benner, Daniel den Dikkenboer, Koos Hooykaas, Christine Boumeester, Roger van Rogger and Louis van Lint. Some of them were awarded in editions of the Bienal, others had lasting relationships with Brazilian artistic institutions. This project also aims to establish of links between MAC-USP and the Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis (RKD), The Netherladns Institute for Art History, in which the candidate developed part of his doctoral research.
