Abstract

The marine environment is extremely diverse and has about 50% of the planet's species, which present a wide spectrum of adaptive mechanisms to the characteristics of the seas and oceans. These mechanisms occur at the morphological, physiological, behavioral and / or biochemical level, where one of the strategies used by animals is the production of poison that helps in the defense or obtaining of food. This secretion is loaded with biologically active molecules, such as proteins, peptides, salts and polyamines, which have therapeutic potential. Among these molecules are peptides, short sequences of amino acids that have a variety of functions, which can act in cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, inflammatory and immunological diseases. From the marine groups that produce poison are the cnidarians, releasing it through structures known as cnidocytes. In this context, this project will use transcriptomic and peptidomic tools to characterize transcripts and peptides of a species of marine anemone widely distributed along the Brazilian coast: Bunodosoma caissarum. This work, therefore, will help to enrich the database, an initial step for future investigation of molecules with pharmacological potential. (AU)
