Abstract

Given the numerous negative externalities of the urban mobility conditions in most cities globally, the need to rethink the current urban model is becoming a consensus. Active modes, such as cycling and walking, are virtually carbon-neutral, demand less road space than private motorized modes, and promote physical activity. Hence, they contribute to the development of healthier and more sustainable urban environments. This research is part of these discussions and aims at contributing with evidence and arguments to support the design of public policies that will promote a transition to urban sustainability. Thus, we will investigate the factors that can help encourage the daily use of active modes (particularly pedestrian and cycling) and the impacts on urban mobility. (AU)
