Abstract

Appetite control/food management and reproductive function are closely connected. Transcranial direct current stimulation can attenuate increased appetite and food intake in the luteal phase in women with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Participants recruited for this randomized, double-blind trial (ETCC placebo and ETCC active) will conduct five sessions. The first will be for familiarization with tests, questionnaires, and anthropometric evaluation. The other four sessions will be held being two sessions in the follicular phase and two in the luteal phase, being, for each phase, one session in the ETCC sham condition and another in the active ETCC condition. The ETCC assembly will follow the following organization: one positive electrode (anode) will be placed in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex region (F3; according to the International System 10-20 - EEG; craniometric points), and another negative electrode (cathode) will be placed in the supra-orbital contralateral region (Fp2; F3, according to the International System 10-20 - EEG; craniometric points). In the experimental sessions the participants will arrive at the laboratory fasting and will receive a standardized breakfast; after 2.5 hours they will be submitted to the ETCC protocol and will subsequently be able to feed in an ad libitum buffet, in which the calories ingested will be computed. During the period that the participants remain in the laboratory, they will also be evaluated the mood profile, and the sensations linked to appetite. After leaving the laboratory, participants will be guided to record all the food ingested that day. The analysis of the data will be done through variance analysis with repeated measures in each condition. (AU)
