Abstract

This research proposes a prose translation of book 15 of Ovid's Metamorphoses, accompanied by a study of that section. If the ambiguous and elusive character of the Metamorphoses is a central part of Ovid's poetic project in his epos, the choice of book 15, which closes the poem, is justified as this book contains formal features which are present throughout the poem - the multiplication of the narrative voice, the mixture of poetic genres, and the frequent allusions to different models, accompanied by their intense and significant manipulation -, besides offering advantages in the appreciation of the work as a whole: the intimate connection of book 15 with book 1 calls into question the unity (or lack of it) of the poem. In addition, as it features Julius Caesar and Augustus with great prominence, book 15 is also fertile for the study of the Ovidian representation of the gens Iulia, a controversial point, despite being much discussed by the specialized critic. Thus, the section is relevant both for the observation of the expedients that constitute Ovid's sui generis poetics and for the reflection of the work as a poetic response to the context of Augustan Rome. Its translation, in addition to offering another version of the book into Portuguese, will allow the thorough and careful analysis of the text, central to its study.
