| Abstract | |
This research has as its object Ovids Metamorphoses Book 15. In this last book of the poem, therefore especially significant in terms of the work as a whole, Ovid works with episodes that refer mainly to the inextricable universes of politics and religion, inserting them in a dynamics of progression and continuity through which he builds the notion of Augustus as the historical-political telos of his universal history, which began with the cosmogony of book 1. At the same time, the poet emulates virtually the entire Greco-Latin tradition to place himself, in the epilogue of his magnum opus, not only as its heir, but, above all, its culmination a poetic telos. The dissertation consists of a translation with commentary of this book. The translation, for which I adopted the Latin edition by Tarrant (2004), reproduced here, was organized verse by verse, aiming to facilitate the comparison with the Latin text; it is not, however, a metric translation; in addition, an attempt was made to maintain, whenever possible, the ornaments (figures, tropes, and metaplasms) present in the original. The commentary on the text explores the characteristics of its elocution, such as metric particularities, the presence of ornaments and their mimetic use; Ovids allusions to Greek and Latin models, through which much of the meaning of the text is constructed; the critical fortune of the episodes and passages; finally, I have tried to provide the necessary information for the apt understanding of a text whose context of production, historical references and dialogue with tradition are extremely distant from the modern reader (AU) | |
