Abstract

The focus of this project for a Master Dissertation is the development of innovations in the methodology for solving the optimal power flows problems that arise from the control of voltages and reactive power flows (volt-var control) in electrical power distribution systems with distributed generations and smart inverters, with the capability to participate in the control of voltages and flows of reactive power. The methodology to achieve the optimal flow will rely on the extensions of dynamic programming concepts named UD-DP (acronym of upstream-downstream dynamic programming). These ideas merge concepts of dynamic programming and network flows optimization into a methodology with the vocation to optimize flows with discrete control variables. The UD-DP bears the perspective of computational efficiency and quality of solutions to optimize volt-var control; these are attractive benefits for distribution networks permeated with distributed generations with smart grid technology. The research is part of the Thematic Project FAPESP 2016/08645-9, Interdisciplinary Research Activities in Electric Smart Grids. It advances previous research in the area of capacitor location and control, developed within a research agreement between CPFL-Piratininga and the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), which developed the methodology encapsulated in the software Aloccap (licensed in 2009 by CPFL and UNICAMP to CPqD) - the original ideas of UD-DP also originated from these research. The project will collaborate with professor Fernanda Caseño Trindade Arioli, who has been developing innovations in volt-var control in smart grids. The research will also follow the formal requirements of the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and strive to improve the academic and cultural background of the candidate.
