Abstract The demand for ecosystem restoration has been growing on the global stage, aiming to obtain different types of environmental and social benefits, such as the conservation of biodiversity, mitigation of climate change and the protection of water sources. However, the availability of areas for the restoration of native ecosystems is hampered by the current land use by agriculture and livestock, and the increase in the productive efficiency of agricultural systems is an opportunity to liberate marginal areas for restoration. In this sense, it stands out as an opportunity to increase the efficiency of mechanized harvesting of sugarcane in the state of São Paulo. The objective of this work is to identify marginal areas of mechanized sugarcane production, through the assessment of Agricultural Operational Inefficiency (AOI), aiming at expanding the restoration of native ecosystems to such regions. For this, a statistical model of multiple regression will be developed from the sampling of 100 agricultural landscapes of 25 km² throughout the state to investigate the relationship between the AOI areas and explanatory independent variables (eg, slope, drainage density, coverage of sugarcane and plot shape metrics), and estimate the potential contribution of restoring native ecosystems in AOI areas to carbon sequestration, increasing landscape connectivity, and reducing the Legal Reserve deficit. Thus, it is expected that the results will be used to guide public policies and assist in making possible the various ecosystem restoration programs in progress in the State of São Paulo. | |
